VSO has been working in Mongolia for over 20 years contributing to development of Mongolia through various interventions to strengthen the capacity of our partners in the areas of education, health and secure livelihoods.
We have also worked towards promoting and supporting national volunteering in all areas where we have worked. Throughout the time we have been working in Mongolia, our focus has always been people with disadvantaged background including people with disabilities and with our partners we have been working to reduce their vulnerability through improving access and quality to basic services for them.
VSO Mongolia has successfully and effectively partnered with government and non-government organisations (NGOs), as well as other international organisations in the respective areas we have worked.
During its work in Mongolia, over 400 VSO volunteers have served in the areas of education, health, secure livelihoods and national volunteering. The volunteers have strengthened the capacity of government and non government organisations to improve their capacity to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable through various interventions such as training, fundraising, strengthening networks and developing resources.
However, Mongolia is a middle-income country with impressive economic growth year to year. The funding from the DFID UK, the long time main funder of VSO, has been curtailed and a decision has been made for VSO to exit Mongolia in March 2014.
We have already closed our programmes in education and secure livelihoods, and our European Commission(EC)-funded community health volunteering project is concluding. Our country office in Mongolia will officially close in March 2014.
However, with this we assure that VSO Mongolia will continue to remain committed to its partners and towards achieving its goals. VSO Mongolia’s poverty reduction efforts will continue to be made through improving community health and community empowerment through the operations of the community health volunteers which is expected to contribute to increased participation of community members in decision making related to service delivery and its management, better education, more opportunities for employment and better quality of life.
Our exit plan is intended to bring country activities to a close such that the tasks being carried out by VSO volunteers and staff are completed with reference to the current EC-funded project, the next steps identified and relevant resources made available to partners and sustainability actions are handed over to the partners as well as appropriate agencies (government, international partners, INGOs and domestic NGOs). The plan also intends to allow our partners to take ownership of the ongoing processes and continue to use the resource materials to carry on with the activities so that they are integrated into their key activities and routines.
VSO volunteers and partners are aware of the exit plan and they will keep supporting us and the sustainability of the work outcomes where VSO has contributed.
