VSO was active in Tajikistan since 2008, and in that time ran successful programmes focusing on secure livelihoods for marginalised youth and women.

In 2014 VSO Tajikistan received an 'A' rating from its main donor, Foreign & Commonwealth Office, for its work with cross-border traders and entrepreneurs. The programme also achieved oustanding success with its innovative  inclusion of Afghan volunteers in its ICS projects.

In 2011, VSO reviewed the best way to allocate our resources to make the greatest possible difference to global poverty. We decided we would begin to close programmes if the country we were operating in was:

  • not least developed
  • had relatively smaller numbers of people in poverty
  • had less regional or global influence

Our office in Tajikistan closed in December 2014.
