Global education

Global Education is about fighting the root causes of poverty by:

  • increasing understanding of global issues and the consequences of our daily actions

  • challenging attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate global poverty

  • inspiring others to take positive action against poverty.

VSO Jitolee recognises that serving volunteers, returned volunteers and partner organisations can all play a key role in Global Education by sharing their first-hand experiences. Global Education can take many forms; from writing a blog to share experiences with friends and family back home to implementing large-scale advocacy and public awareness campaigns.

Our Global Education objectives

  • Increase intercultural exposure through linking different communities, volunteers and partners

  • Increase volunteers’ and partners’ understanding of wider development education issues and trends

  • Increase awareness and understanding of specific development issues amongst populations in Kenya and Uganda.

Our priorities for 2010

For 2010, VSO Jitolee’s Global Education Committee comprised of serving volunteers, returned volunteers and VSO staff, has identified key projects and priorities which include:

  • Protecting children against commercial sexual exploitation through responsible tourism (Coast Region)

  • Peace building, social justice and equity (Nairobi Region)

  • Water, sanitation and waste management (Western Region)

  • Food security (Eastern Region).
