Laos launches project to protect livelihoods

02/02/2010

The government of Laos has introduced a new national strategy which aims to boost the security of livelihoods and the health of its citizens, one news source has reported.

According to the Malaysian publication Bernama, the Lao New Agency reported that the National Nutrition Strategy has been introduced to tackle malnutrition and achieve food security among ethnic minority groups.

Improving livelihoods, lowering mortality rates and boosting nutrition are also major objectives of the initiative.

The strategy evaluates food supplies in the Asian country and outlines goals for achieving its objectives in the future, the news provider added.

Laos, which has operated under communist rule since the 1970s, is one of the poorest countries in east Asia, with many citizens unable to access electricity or basic facilities.

Access to health services is particularly difficult for those in rural areas, according to World Vision, with many families dwelling in one-roomed homes made of bamboo or wood.
