Dutch teacher commits support to nursery in the Gambia

02/03/2010

A veteran Dutch teacher has promised to support a nursery school in the Gambia - both financially and through new teaching methods.

Sietske Veenstra - who works at the De Wielen Nursery School in Holland - is to help out at Winnie's Nursery School in Jambanjelly, according to the country's Today newspaper.

She first came to the Gambia in 2008 and witnessing the lack of resources and inadequacy of teaching techniques, has now decided to return.

Funds were approved last year for tables and chairs and Ms Veenstra now hopes to employ new learning approaches - such as educating younger children in smaller groups - at the school.

She added that the infants need not "have to sit the whole day listening to lectures", but should do more "practical work".

Last month, the Project Aiding Gambian Education and Natural Talent vowed to donate around 80 microscopes to schools in the country.
