Education managers

By itself, improving the skills of teachers in the developing world is not enough to ensure education for all children by 2015. We urgently need volunteers with experience in education management at primary school level (we also have a limited number of placements for managers with secondary-level experience) to go overseas in roles as soon as possible.

Roles generally range from one to two years.

You’ll be a qualified and experienced head teacher, deputy head teacher, local education adviser or a senior level teacher with at least three to five years’ senior or middle management experience.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll work to improve education programmes and the quality of education delivery. You’ll help with school planning, teacher training programmes, continuous professional development, inspection systems, school administration and budgeting, and teacher recruitment, in countries such as Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria or Rwanda.

Example placement

Placement for: Education Leadership and Management Advisor

Country: Ethiopia

Working as a Leadership and Management Advisor, you will provide support to the local education offices and teacher training institutes to promote participatory practices and develop the leadership and management of schools.

What does the role involve?:

  • Working with education district officer to improve systems and procedures, including organisational learning and information management, with particular emphasis on gender equity
  • Developing guidelines for school supervision on monitoring and evaluation
  • Strengthening links between the Regional Education Bureau and education officers to encourage the sharing of best practice
  • Making baseline needs assessments and building capacity of school officials to offer professional and supportive services to schools
  • Coaching  and mentoring education managers, officers and school supervisors in data collection, monitoring and evaluation skills

Skills, qualifications and experience required

A post-graduate degree in education planning and management in any relevant education field plus a minimum of five years management experience is essential.  You will need proven experience in information management, project management and leadership development. Self-motivated and well-organised, you will need strong interpersonal and communication skills with the confidence to create positive relationships in diverse working environments.

During your placement you’ll be based in Assosa, in the developing region of Benishangul Gumuz. Assosa is a beautiful area with a developing infrastructure and access to basic and essential service. The local language is Amharic; VSO will provide necessary language training and support. We’ll ask you to commit to 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we’ll give you comprehensive financial, personal and professional support.  We’ll provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial package includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation, insurance and more. When you return to your home country, we'll support you to resettle.
